I am an information systems person, not a designer who learned to code.

* Background

Twelve years in IS. Nearly a decade fixing things other people would not touch.

I spent 12 years in IS and MIS before my employer outsourced my job. The focus was
never the technology. It was the information. I have always believed that if a 3x5
index card and a pencil is the best solution, that is the one you implement.

After a year off I started Wye Oak Mobile Device Repair from my dining room table. It
was supposed to be a mobile device repair shop. It turned into something closer to
"Yup, I fix that too." I ran it out of the Amish Market in Easton for nearly a decade.
Microsoldering iPhone boards, migrating data off legacy systems, repairing CMM machines
running FreeDOS, troubleshooting 25-year-old computers, replacing CCFL bulbs in custom
HMI displays. The work that made other technicians uncomfortable was usually the work I
found most interesting. I sold the business in 2025.

* What the Shop Taught Me

Customers do not care about technology.

Running a real local business taught me things most web designers never learn. Customers
do not care about technology. They care about whether you show up, whether you are
honest, and whether the thing works when you hand it back. They also want to know who
they are dealing with. Many of my Wye Oak customers became friends I still keep in
touch with today. That is not something I planned. It is just what happens when you
treat people like people.

* How I Work

Listen until you actually understand.

A client named Mike came to me on a referral. He had already talked to five people and
one large agency about his website. Nobody had impressed him. I spent an hour and a
half asking him questions, then stopped and said: "Let me summarize what you just told
me. Correct me if I got anything wrong." He looked at me and said none of the others
had done that. He hired me on the spot.

That is the job. Not the code. Not the platform. Listening until you actually
understand, then building something that reflects what the business owner is trying
to say.

Based on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

I am based on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I also publish Your Good News, a community
news and directory project focused on Easton and Talbot County. If you want a website
built by someone who listens, has actually run a local business, and will not hand you
something fragile and confusing to maintain, that is what I do.
